Phoenix: Recently, the CEO of WhatsApp posted that the app has crossed 800 million monthly active users. With such a huge growth, it’s also expected that the app would cross 1 billion monthly active users by the end of 2015. Even though number of instant messengers is increasing day by day, WhatsApp has been successful in retaining the users by catering to their needs.
Just a few months ago, WhatsApp gave a try on testing backup and restore options for text messages and media through Google Drive. The users spotted the feature quite earlier when they were notified by WhatsApp at 4 AM (WhatsApp’s default time for backing up messages and media) asking for the permission to access their Google Drive; however the feature was removed soon. But now if reports are to be believed, the backup and restore feature is making its way with the latest WhatsApp for Android version 2.12.194.
Backup option to be found only in the Drive Settings
- It’s been published on Android police that the backup option cannot be found in WhatsApp settings as before. It can only be seen in the Drive settings > Manage Apps. Earlier, the backup feature was found in “App settings > Chat settings > Chat Backup”. The users just had to tap on the backup option and enter the details of the Google account to back up the files. The users were also able to choose the backup frequency (daily, weekly or monthly).
- The users have to note that the recent version (v2.12.194) has not reached Google Play yet. So the users will have to wait for some more time to use the backup and restore feature. Those who are too eager about the new features can get the latest update from WhatsApp's page.
Many features to come along with the latest version
- The latest version of WhatsApp for Android (v2.12.194) is said to bring many other features like mark as unread feature, custom notifications and so on. With custom notifications, you can change the notification settings for individual contacts or groups. You can assign the different tones and color of light to blink for different contacts and groups.
- Mark as unread feature as in Facebook is also expected to be out with the latest version. The users can just long press on the contact and mark the message as unread. However the feature doesn’t change the status on the sender’s device; the feature can be useful in a case where the user wants to get back to the conversation after sometime. The update also added an option to lower the data usage for voice calls. This can be useful in the locations where there is limited connectivity.
